INTRODUCING THE NEW PEEL2SAVE CARD
Now available for purchase at DUFC Open Day on Sunday 14th August (12noon - 3pm)

Season tickets, valued at some £35,000 have been made available through donations and fund raising from individual local and exiled fans, supporters’ organisations, and from Dundee United Football Club itself which has £1 for £1 matched the generosity of the fans. This month, a record 250 season tickets for 2011/12 were allocated to children and young people from across Dundee, together with a provision for their adult supervisors and carers.

The tickets are circulated across Dundee's Integrated Children and Young Person's Services, both within the city council and the voluntary sector to ensure that the most disadvantaged children in our community benefit. Many of those young people have little or no hope of seeing their local football heroes in action on a weekly basis. The feedback from this scheme over the last six years has been extremely positive, with workers and carers reporting that children and young people were getting a great deal.

The peel2save card is a great money saving idea that supports the local economy but at the same time raises funds for worthy causes and non profit making organisations. The card offers lots of offers and discounts from local businesses and has a value of over £300 and only costs £10 and we will donate 50% of the cost to our popular United for Kids programme. We intend to have the cards on sale at the Tangerine Trading Post in G Fox Stand at DUFC Open Day on Sunday 14th August (12 noon - 3pm)

Along with our partners at ArabTRUST, we are the first organisations in Dundee to have the cards available. The card fits in your wallet or purse and is easy to carry and use. Please buy one. Some of the local list of businesses you can save money on are shown below;

BOW STRIPS FOR CHARITY

Bow's Legends, the team of former Dundee United stars that has raised tens of thousands for charity by taking on all-comers in recent years, has been brought up to date after being handed two new sets of strips last Friday.

At Tannadice, team boss Dave Bowman took receipt of brand new home and away kit worth around £1500 donated by charities UNITED for ALL and Dreamz4U.

Both have close links to the Tangerines and in the past have benefited from the exploits of Bowman's fund-raising team.

"Our kit was getting a bit shabby, so it's great to get home and away sets like that and now the winter is over we'll be putting them to good use," said Bow.

Handing over the kit were Dave Mulholland, Chairman of UNITED for ALL and Jimmy Michie from Dreamz4U.

COURSE ACHIEVES GOAL

A pilot Employability Training Programme managed by local charity, UNITED for ALL in partnership with The Venture Trust and with the support of Dundee City Council's Discover Opportunities culminated in a special awards ceremony at Tannadice when some young people were presented with certificates by Dundee United star, Scott Severin.

The group, who were at risk of leading negative lives because of their difficult social backgrounds successfully completed several days of intensive learning exercises at Dens Park combined with football and fitness activities undertaken at Gussie Park.

The project’s goal was to deliver a course to help young adults to lead healthier, positive lifestyles by giving them a chance to work with support agencies in Dundee to help them towards employment, education or training.

David Mulholland, Chairman of UNITED for ALL said, “Football was used as the hook to capture their interest and participants loved the mixture of confidence boosting activities and teamwork sessions. The project provides young adults with the time and support to practice skills and techniques that will help them without the fear of persecution or failure.”

Bert Sandeman, Corporate Planning Manager, Dundee City Council added, “The programme exceeded staff expectations due to the collaborative support from all the agencies and most importantly the energy and commitment from the participants. We are confident that we can develop more courses that will encourage other young people at risk to make steps towards fulfilling their potential and being productive members of society.”

One of the group has already been offered a post at a local retailer and most of the participants have job interviews lined up.

A unanimous piece of feedback from the young people was that they wished the course could have lasted longer.

SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD WEEKEND OF ACTION

An Anti-Racism Seminar for P7 pupils at St. Clement’s PS and St. Andrew’s PS, Dundee was held in the Craig Levein Lounge, Tannadice Park, on Friday 29 October. The panellists included Darren Dods (DUFC), SNP Councillor Jim Barrie and UNISON Branch Secretary Rory Malone.

Anti Racism Seminars have regularly taken place at Tannadice for many years and follow a basic format consisting of pupils coming from diverse backgrounds arriving to view a DVD presentation followed by a Question & Answer session where the panel consists of present players, ex-players, local politicians and representatives from Show Racism the Red Card. Prizes are awarded for best questions, there’s a tour of the stadium, photo/autograph session with first team squad and distribution of goodie bags on departure that include a large colour team photo and complimentary match ticket for an SPL game

The event successfully raised awareness of serious issues and galvanised support for the anti racism message. It offered an excellent opportunity for role models to engage with young people in a stimulating environment and influence attitudes and perceptions. There was a genuine impact on their thinking and most youngsters openly reflected on challenging situations which were discussed.

Dundee United FC and other supporters’ organisations all played an active part in the activities and fully supported the aims and objectives.

At the weekend’s Clydesdale Bank Premier League matches, players from every SPL club were united in calling for an end to racism in football and society.  SPL clubs set the example as players warmed up in red card t-shirts, showed red cards before kickoff, and managers wore badges in support of the action.

Players in over 40 European countries were also involved in similar events as part of the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network against racism and discrimination.

Neil Doncaster, Chief Executive of the Scottish Premier League, said: “Football is a powerful medium to break down barriers and promote tolerance. This united action in support of the Show Racism the Red Card campaign sends out the positive message that football is a game to be enjoyed by all.”

Billy Singh of Show Racism the Red Card Scotland said: “Once again we are delighted that our leading clubs are taking a united stand against racism. This weekend is the culmination of two weeks of concerted anti-racist activity throughout Scotland. Football is leading the way in trying to change people’s attitudes and behaviour within football grounds. Our challenge is to spread that message to our communities and everyday lives."

BALGAY AFC SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD

Players for the team met with Dundee city councillors and UNITED for ALL's Coordinator, Mike Barile to urge people of all creeds and colours to join the team.

Organiser Rory Malone, UNISON said Dundee was a multi cultural city and this should be reflected in those playing for the local football teams. Councillor Alan Ross who, together with Councillor Jim Barrie, also attended the event in the Balgay Bar added: "We are promoting the Show Racism the Red Card initiative to give out the message that the team and the amateur football league is open to anyone. Dundee is a very diverse place with many diverse cultures and we would like to see more people of different cultures playing football in the city."

UNITED FOR KIDS
Dundee United, their supporters and Dundee City Council’s Integrated Children’s Services have teamed up for the sixth consecutive year to give disadvantaged children in the local community free season tickets for Tannadice.

At the stadium today Dundee United Chairman Stephen Thompson presented some 240 books issued under the United for Kids initiative to Dundee City Council Leader Ken Guild and Social Work and Health Committee Convener, Jim Barrie.

The United for Kids appeal was originally suggested by an exiled fan and was launched at the end of June 2005, with the Club pledging to match every penny donated to the appeal by fans. The scheme has grown steadily each season and is now administered by a registered charity – United for All, who can also re-claim income tax via the government’s Gift Aid programme.

Generous donations were made this year by many groups and individuals including the Federation of DUSC, Monte Carlo Arabs, Exodun Charitable Trust and the Claremont Trust.

Despite the difficulties experienced by many in our current economic recession, funds were bolstered this year by United’s Centenary Dinner and the re-played match against Rangers.

Councillor Jim Barrie said, “This is a very generous gift from both club and fans and will allow many children, the opportunity to enjoy supporting their local football club. It is very satisfying to see so many tickets go to the various projects and agencies involved throughout the city.”

Councillor Guild praised Dundee United and their fans for their generosity, saying "it is a great opportunity for those children living in residential or foster care, or have previously been 'looked after', or young carers or generally those children to who could not otherwise afford to attend matches."

Stephen Thompson said, “We take our role in the local community very seriously and wish to be as inclusive as possible. The scheme has been a fantastic success and these children are amongst some of the most vulnerable in our community and deserve this opportunity.

“I would like to thank the charity United for All and Children’s Services for readily agreeing to assist us in the organisation and distribution of tickets and we look forward to a continuing relationship with them on this, and perhaps other, initiatives in the future. I would also like to thank our fans who once again have demonstrated their generosity and their commitment to the local community.”

UNITED FOR DADS AND KIDS

A local Family Support Project in Dundee found that males within the community felt that they were under-represented in parenting groups and that most groups were geared towards females. The project has started to address this imbalance through the provision of season tickets donated by Dundee United Football Club and their supporters through the charity 'United for All'.

The idea of a group based around football and father led activities was in direct response to information provided by several of the fathers interviewed. They stated that their children and themselves were interested in football, but were prevented from attending the games, due to financial constraints. With the provision of tickets, a pool of participants was developed and each parent involved was offered tickets on a rolling basis, with priority being given to those committed to attending. From the uptake of the tickets it is apparent that a demand for this type of provision is high and definitely assists in the sustained and effective engagement of traditional non-participants.

All the feedback from dads and kids has been extremely positive with everyone stating that they enjoyed themselves, spent quality time with their children and were only able to attend matches due to the provision of free tickets. The letter copied below was written by one of the dads and illustrates the benefit of the free tickets

As a father or three I would like to thank you for what has become a very memorable year/season.  To explain, before a ball was kicked last season I found myself being paid off.  Then reality kicked in, I had to give up my Dundee United games (just cant afford it) and my priorities had to change.  But then a chance conversation with a local community worker who told me that with the backing of my beloved United he could get me and my young lad some free tickets to games we’d otherwise have had to miss so for home games it was back, all back on (Ye Ha).  And what a season it turned out to be after many years of following United with or without a season ticket, this season allowed me and my young lad to see United finish in their highest position for years (3rd).  Things got better as due to circumstances at home changing and due to all the free tickets throughout the season we could afford to follow our team to Hampden to see them win the Scottish Cup Final and bring the trophy home.  I cant thank everyone involved enough for giving me and my young lad such a great season, while I hope to return to paying for my own season ticket next year (not definite yet) but if I do I’m sure whoever gets the  free tickets next season, will appreciate them as much  as we did.

Some of the other comments returned by the fathers through feedback sheets gathered after each game:

“Enjoy being with kids”
“Meeting new friends and being with my son”
“Watching the match wi’ my boys”
“Playing in the park before the game & watching the match”
“Having dads & lads times”
“Son enjoyed having fun with his dad & friends and enjoying the football”
“Kids enjoyed the goals and the fact that I got hit in the face with the ball”

There has been a wide range of positive outcomes from this initiative such as
•    Families experiencing a reduction in the impact of poverty
•    Fathers contributing positively to the family dynamic
•    Families accessing an activity they would not have been able to due to financial constraints.
•    A reduction in isolation that fathers and children may experience.
•    Improved levels of responsibility shown by fathers in relation to their parental duties.
•    Participants engaged in an activity in a safe, positive environment.

The football season ticket initiative proved to be a great success and has resulted in a number of families being able to attend Dundee United home games, resulting in fathers engaging positively with their children and peers. Several of those involved have began to engage with other community provision and have expressed interest in future activities, especially more football matches.

DUNDEE UNITED PROMOTE A POSITIVE ANTI-RACIST MESSAGE

Dundee United FC held their second Show Racism the Red Card seminar this season, the club’s eighth since the campaign began in October 2003. As with previous community based work The ArabTRUST and UNITED for ALL were partners to the development of this project and demonstrated that racism is something that neither the club nor the fan-base will accept. Key to the seminar was the attendance of local S2 school pupils from Menzieshill HS

A screening of the Show Racism the Red Card (Scotland) film which features Prince Bauben and Craig Levein was  followed by a lively Q&A session between the pupils and Dundee United’s, Damien Casalinuovo, Francisco Sandaza and Sean Dillon. Also on the panel were Scottish footballing legends and Show Racism the Red Card coaches Derek Ferguson, Michael Weir and Gary MacKay.

Local politicians Marlyn Glen MSP and Councillor Jim Barrie also participated.

After a session getting Dundee United posters signed, the young people were given a grand tour of Tannandice Park and provided with tickets for Dundee United v Heart of Midlothian on 7th March.

Stephen Thompson DUFC Chairman said: ”Once again we are pleased to host this important event and although we are proud of our excellent record in this city we cannot be complacent about the challenge of racism. We have no place at Tannadice for bigots.

Billy Singh, Campaign Manager with Show Racism the Red Card added “Dundee United have been great supporters of the campaign over the years. The young people we speak to in Dundee clearly demonstrate support for the anti-racist message, we hope that they take that message back to their schools and their communities."

UNITED FOR KIDS SCHEME

Dundee United FC and UNITED for ALL are pleased to announce that they have agreed for UfA to take over and operate the successful United for Kids Scheme. All donations given to United for Kids will now be encouraged to go through the appropriate UfA and ArabTRUST “Just Giving” website pages, which attract gift aid from the Inland Revenue. Cash and cheques will continue to be accepted by the Club and these donations will also offer the opportunity to reclaim gift aid from UK taxpayers.

David Mulholland, Chairman of UfA highlighted that “Although United for Kids has now established itself, we will be able to attract further benefits to the scheme via corporate and government funding for appeals which were not previously accessible by the Club. We aim to develop the scheme to enable even more disadvantaged youngsters to participate.”

Lookout for the tangerine Collecting Cans which will be appearing in appropriate areas around Tannadice including local pubs and shops.

SIGNED BALLS

UfA has also agreed to purchase 500 footballs to be used for donations and other charitable purposes on behalf of the Club.

The present request system will still be followed and a small charge as usual may be made for the service provided depending on the applicants’ status.
Any proceeds from those purchased will be re-invested in the project to enable the process to be sustainable.

MONEY FOR NOTHING ...... A NEW RECYCLE SCHEME

UfA are now participating in a project which recycles cartridges and phones. Simply leave your old item in one of the marked bags available at our Collection Points located in The Club Shop, Main Reception or one of the Tangerine Trading Posts. Every 30 items of value received will qualify us for a free collection by our recycling partner.

Recycling your laser/ink cartridges and mobile phones with UfA is environmentally friendly and helps to reduce the 250 million cartridges dumped in landfill sites in the last decade as well as helping you raise money for UfA’s exciting new football projects.
According to current statistics, only 5% of empty toner cartridges are currently being recycled - this means 95% of these items are simply discarded and end up in landfill sites. As well as taking up room in our already-limited landfill sites, it can take up to 1.5 litres of oil to produce a new laser cartridge from scratch and a discarded used toner/ink cartridge can take over 1000 years to decompose, this is not good news for our environment!

MINISTER SUPPORTS COMMUNITY SPORTS PROGRAMME

Minister for Public Health and Sport Shona Robison visited one of Dundee United’s community schools coaching sessions this month and was impressed at the scale of the not for profit initiative which began last year under the stewardship of ex player and Scotland Internationalist Dave Bowman.

80 children from Burnside Primary school in Carnoustie attended the session, which is part of a programme designed to encourage participation in sport and healthy and responsible lifestyles.

Minister for Public Health and Sport Shona Robison said: “It is fantastic to see so many young Dundonians getting excited by being active and engaging in local community sport. Dundee United FC now have over 40 community coaches delivering programmes throughout the city to youngsters from the ages of 5 to 14 – an excellent way to encourage youngsters to adopt healthy lifestyles, now and into adulthood.”

Mike Barile, Coordinator of UNITED for ALL charity who arranged the visit said: ” We are delighted that this not for profit community initiative has been recognised by the Minister as an excellent way not only to to encourage participation in sport, but also to encourage healthy and responsible lifestyles.”

The community schools programme operates on an eight week professional coaching module under Dave Bowman and also encourages an emphasis on fitness and healthy eating, coupled with social awareness messages, including the issues of drug misuse, bullying and racism. Already over 1,600 children, of all ages, have taken part in the programme and Dave and his team have visited schools of all sizes in both rural and town locations. Each module costs only £20 and each child is provided with free bespoke training gear to keep. The value of the kit is greater than the cost of the course, effectively providing free participation. This free kit provision has been made possible by sponsorship from partner organisations such as ArabTRUST, the Dundee United Business Club and others. All participating children are also given free SPL match tickets.

BLACK WATCH REGIMENT

As a result of a joint partnership between ArabTRUST, Dee4Life and the charity UNITED for ALL, representatives from The Black Watch were presented with 140 free tickets for the derby game on Tuesday 10th November.

Receiving the tickets from Chairman Stephen Thompson were brothers-in-law LCpl Ryan Richardson and LCpl Barry Thomson. They are pictured alongside UfA Chairman Dave Mulholland and 1st Team Manager / Director of Football, Craig Levein.

The Black Watch troops, recently returned from Afghanistan, were given a standing ovation as they paraded around Tannadice before kick-off to allow supporters to show their appreciation in a community tribute to their bravery and dedication

The soldiers remained pitch side and took part in the impeccably observed minute's silence in recognition of Remembrance Day.

PALESTINIAN FIREFIGHTERS

Guests at Tuesday night's derby also included eight Palestinian firefighters. The firemen, from Nablus, are in Scotland for three weeks undertaking training at the Scottish Fire Services College and are spending a week in Dundee, the city twinned with their home town of Nablus. During their stay in Scotland, they have visited many tourist, cultural and historic attractions but just HAD to visit Tannadice to get a taste of some "alternative" Arab culture!

Needless to say, they enjoyed the occasion tremendously. Ken Ross of the Fire Brigades Union told us," This is the first time that they have been in Scotland (indeed Europe) and they have loved their time here. We are all extremely grateful to Dundee United for their very kind hospitality on the evening of the Dundee Derby. It was a great experience for them and good for the club to have some REAL Arabs at the game!!"
